When you lock the knife within the sheath, there is a spot on the back of the sheath where you apply pressure to open the knife with your thumb. For protection, the knife locks in place so it doesn't fall out. This is not a flaw, the user has to apply pressure on the sheath to a certain location so that the knife can be withdrawn from it.
